DMA - Young Marketers Rising

DMA (Direct Marketing Association) held it’s first talk directed to Young Marketing Professionals tonight in Soho, something I would not have initially though would be relevant to me.

I thought it might be good to go anyways to learn some new skills, meet new people and do something productive with my Monday night, otherwise I’m sure I would have been on the sofa watching another mind-numbing tv show.

I’m not exactly in the marketing industry, but the creative industry is so intertwined, most topics are relevant!

There were 2 really different speakers; Vikki Chowney (@vikkichowney) explained how she got to where she is today and what important skills we should take away from it, whereas the Linkee boys (@playlinkee) talked collaboration, determination and Dragons’ Den.

The main things I came away thinking about were:

• Follow your gut - only you know if you’re making the right decision
• Make the most of every opportunity - it may never come round again
• If you don’t know if you can fulfil the job at hand, you can always learn on the way
• Be proactive - do everything possible to get where you want to be; be heard, be seen, be busy
• Follow up on connections, keep in touch and make sure you’re there when they want help
• Naivety can be good, especially when you have the passion to carry on even when you may be scared of failing

Looking forward to the next meeting!

For all you young girls who are trying to figure out life’s many wonders, why don’t you try “Princess Leg Spa”?

"Own the slender legs at once"
Way to objectify women!

Thank god for the pink background - I never would’ve downloaded it if it had a blue background. Thanks George CL!

VIDEO: Helium Harvey and his imagination…

http://vimeo.com/85377978

Helium Harvey - a curious little boy who somehow (without his parents permission) takes in a load if Helium and drifts off to an imaginary land! A few imaginary lands at that…

An artistic and beautifully crafted film by Something Savage.

Finally finished my product retouching experiment!

I was thinking of it as an advert for Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum as I was working on the image. I wanted to create something a little different to all the other Captain Morgan’s adverts I’ve seen but whilst keeping on a nautical pirate theme. I always liked the idea of old tales of sea creatures like the Kraken and thought they lent themselves to giving the tasty rum from the depths of the sea.

I’ve included some close up’s of the detail that not perhaps clear straight away and a gif just to illustrate exactly what was done to create the image.

This piece wouldn’t have been possible without all these bits of stock images:

Sunset 1
Sunset 2
Sea
Pirate Boat
Normal Boat
Tentacle 1
Tentacles 2 & 3
Bottle

Game of Thrones + Social Media = a Nerd’s fantasy world!

Check out the latest Video by social media management company, HootSuite, where, rather than focusing on their own brand for self promotion purposes, they envisage the world of social media today.

http://youtu.be/el8Ydwh0QlQ

I’ve got to say, some of the graphics aren’t as creative as I’ve seen others do; the YouTube roman stadium could have been made bigger and could have opened up more elegantly.

Also, why is Snapchat hidden? I get that it’s trying to replicate ‘The North past the Wall’ and how it’s the unknown, but it’s a great platform for social media marketing.

Overall I think it’s a beautifully created video but it’s a shame there is so much sparse land. It would have been amazing for everything to be bigger and crazier. Afterall, social media is the biggest craze right now and it won’t be leaving anytime soon!

Hint: I’d love to see how this social media ‘world’ would look in 10 years time. I wonder if it will change so drastically or if these 4 worlds will still be central to it all.

VIDEO: An almost exact replica of the Game of Thrones opener with a Skyrim twist.

http://vimeo.com/bradywold/thrones

What Brady Wold thought would be a quick evening bit of fun, soon turned out to be a full on 2 year project. Its been immaculately created, with an even pace throughout and intresting ways of making the buildings come alive.

My favourite bit is when the windmill opens up, one panel at a time.

Just beautiful. Thanks for seeing his through Brady - and just in time for Game of Thrones season 4!
